BROMSGROVE produced Birmingham League Division One's shock of the season so far when they overwhelmed top of the table Moseley by seven wickets.

But there was a bigger bombshell to follow when it was revealed that Worcestershire had released their matchwinner Alexie Kervezee.

The Dutch allrounder deliberately didn't tell any of the players prior to the game with Moseley for fear of distracting them from the challenge ahead.

But Bromsgrove skipper Mark Evenson confirmed he knew of the decision earlier in the week of Alexie's axing, but kept the news from his players at Kervezee's request and claimed: "Nobody at Bromsgrove can understand the decision. We see the talent week in, week out and we all know exactly how good he can be.

"Anyone who watched him dismantle Moseley's bowling attack must be wondering the same, but it seems as though he's been frozen out by Worcester after 11 years.

"Cricket has been Alexie's life, ever since he arrived at Worcester as a 16 to 17 year old.

"Alexie came to Bromsgrove in my first year as captain and I can say he's been the most loyal professional cricketer the club has ever had.

"Alexie has now made himself available to us for the rest of the season unless another county comes in for him.

"I believe he's going to play a couple of Second XI games for Derbyshire but Alexie has insisted he's not going to tout himself around the counties."

Moseley were initially undone by the golden arm of 43 year old seamer Gareth Williams who snapped up figures of six for 58 from 17 overs as the league leaders were bowled out for 133 runs.

Evenson added: "Gareth bowled almost robotically, putting the ball on the spot everytime. Whenever I thought about taking him off, he'd go and grab another wicket.

"In the end he bowled 17 overs straight off and claimed that if he stopped, he'd never get going again!

Evenson also got in on the act, taking two for one off 15 balls while Kervezee gave nothing away with one for 10 from 13 overs.

But Kervezee was simply irresistible with the bat as he blitzed 86 off just 47 balls as Bromsgrove breezed to a winning 139 for three.

Evenson added: "Alexie treated the bowling like cannon-fodder, even though he was a bit down.

"After such a marvellous innings, his release from Worcestershire has come as a bit of a shock.

"I knew his contract was coming up for renewal at the end of the season and I get the impression that Alexie was aware the writing was on the wall. He now has some big decisions to make."
