Scunthorpe 15, Bromsgrove 28
IN-FORM Bromsgrove completed their away fixtures in the National Midlands Three with an eye-catching win over Scunthorpe.
A controlled display saw director of rugby Dan Protherough’s side record one of their most complete wins of the season.
John Critchlow got the ball rolling with a penalty after a Phil Horton attack had forced the home defence to panic.
Scunthorpe hit back with a kick of their own, put away by Steve Johnson, but it was the away side who took control.
Critchlow punished another error with a second penalty but it needed some alert defending to stop a Scunthorpe break in its tracks.
But the away side nearly bagged the game’s first try when Tom Millen was tackled just before the line.
But captain Paul Norris touched down after clever work to fool Scunthorpe’s defence by Critchlow, who also added the extras.
Lewis then raced through to score after Critchlow’s clever pass had set him free as the Boars raced into an 18-3 lead.
Bromsgrove scored again from the ensuing kick-off as good play by Norris, Matt Edgar and Jamie Tsang, allowed Horton to round off a 75 metre attack.
while the conversion was missed, the Boars were in control.
Lewis nearly scored another try early in the second half as the away side, marshalled by scrum half Richard Mahoney, piled the pressure on Scunthorpe.
But as hosts worked their way into the game and saw Colin Chapman bag a try and when Sam Montieri was sin-binned for a killing the ball, Tom Foster darted down the blind side and reached the try line. The score was converted by Steve Johnson.
Scunthorpe saw a Johnson penalty ruled out by the touch judge.
Bromsgrove appeared the fitter side and Protherough used his bench well to keep the pressure on Scunthorpe.
The visitors camped in the Scunthorpe 22, and following another great lineout catch and drive, Horton bagged the bonus point try the team’s performance deserved.
The conversion was wayward, but it didn’t really matter, the better side won comfortably, and in some style.
Bromsgrove end the season by taking on champions South Leicester at home on Saturday.
