SKIPPER Andy Sutton led from the front as Barnt Green finally got their Birmingham League campaign up and running with a prized 129 run victory over fellow strugglers Wolverhampton.

The Green registered their first win of the season to lift themselves off bottom spot - at Wolverhampton's expense.

In a match that produced numerous twists and turns, the Green eventually set a total of 192 before reducing Wolves to just 63 all out in reply.

The Green were given an early morning boost when skipper Sutton received a phone call from Matt Lamb who had been left out of Warwickshire's County Championship side to face Glamorgan and was offering to play.

But the game didn't start well, when Warwickshire team mate Ed Pollock was removed in the first over with just one run on the scoreboard.

Sutton was joined at the crease by wicketkeeper George Hargrave and the pair put on 119 for the second wicket.

Sutton went onto make a patient 71 off 141 balls while Hargrave added 58.

Matt Lamb then scored 30 before being trapped lbw as the Green went from 171 for three to 192 all out.

Sutton admitted his dismay at the final total, he said: "We'd set the platform to go on to score 220 to 230 at the very least, so I was really disappointed with the total.

"I told the lads at the interval that we'd got to show a bit more fight. I was really determined to try and do something because I realised the importance of this game.

"But even I was surprised at just how well we did."

Wolves collapsed from the word go and found themselves 33 for nine at one stage before tailenders Aaron Patel and Babar Khan provided a bit of belated resistance.

Sutton followed up his batting heroics by taking three for 18 while strike partner Adam Hines claimed four for 11 as Wolves collapsed in their wake.

Delighted Sutton said: "We just hit the right line and length and started to apply pressure, while all the edges and nicks went in right direction.

"The pitch was fine, it wasn't a snake-pit or anything like that and if I'd won the toss, I would have batted first in any case.

"They gave us an early wicket with a run-out but we just went for the throat and it worked.

"The talent is there, it's just that we've not shown the same grit and determination before, but this is something we can build upon. It's a case of building confidence now."

Barnt Green entertain Smethwick this Saturday and Sutton will wait to see how many of his Warwickshire contingent are made available.

He added: "It's great when someone like Matt Lamb rings, eager to play. But while we gained, Matt, we lost Josh Poysden as Warwickshire decided to go with two spinners against Glamorgan.

"Josh picked up a 'five-for' and everyone at Barnt Green was busying texting him after the game. It couldn't have been more deserved."
