Sporting must learn to be tough – Mander

First published in Sport

BROMSGROVE Sporting must become more ruthless if they are to maintain their momentum in the Midland Combination, insists boss Adrian Mander.

The fourth-placed Rouslers head into Saturday’s Smedley Crooke Memorial Charity Cup second-round clash at home to Knowle (3pm ko) on the back of two contrast draws.

Sporting bounced back from their disappointing 0-0 draw at Pilkington XXX last week with a stirring 2-2 against title-chasing Nuneaton Griff.

Matty Poyner, who made sure it was honours even with his 81st-minute effort, ensured Sporting stretched their unbeaten run to four games.

Manager Mander, who was on holiday, said: “We’ve got to be more ruthless against the sides below us.

“We want to win every game and I was pleased with a point against Nuneaton but we were disappointed with the draw against Pilkington.”

Bromsgrove welcome back Mark Benbow, Chris Duggan, Jack Wilson, Stefan Ashman and Daniel Morris, who all missed the Nuneaton game because of injuries or work commitments.

Mander looks set to sign another centre- forward tomorrow night.

He has also signed up former Kidderminster left-back Ashley Checketts.

Checketts is a product of Harriers’ youth team set-up and was once predicted by former academy boss Jerry Gill to break into the Skrill Premier side’s first team squad.

Mander added: “Having lost all the players in the summer and rebuilding the squad I wish we had this group at the start of the season.

“I am very happy with the players but we’re always looking to strengthen.”

Sporting go to Malvern in the Worcestershire Senior Cup next Wednesday (7.45pm ko).
