THIS month’s talk was A Bridge too Far by ex-paratrooper Chris Bullock. Chris began by explaining the many intelligence failings which led to the flawed planning of Operation Market Garden, such as targeting the road bridge over the river rather than the wider railway bridge.
He then explained the initial landings were at Oosterbeek rather than nearer the objective.
Only a small part of the force reached the Bridge at Arnhem and gallantly held on.
When it became clear that they could not reach the Arnhem Bridge in sufficient numbers and hold it long enough for the British armoured relief column to break through, General Urquhart ordered his men to form the Oosterbeek pocket.
From then on only surrender was left. 2,000 Airborne soldiers were killed and nearly were 7,000 captured. A tragic end to a valiant effort.
Next meeting Wednesday July 15 at St Luke’s Church Hall, Headless Cross will be The Dig for Victory Campaign of WW2 by Ron Gallivan.
Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start. Normal £4 door charge applies. Contact Ron Gallivan on 01527 545450 or email ronnieg33b@ hotmail.co.uk for full details.
