THE world is currently commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One but there is another battle which goes back much further in the mists of time which is also about to be celebrated.

Head north of the border and you can join in the events surrounding the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn - which took place on what is probably Scotland’s most famous battlefield. It was here, in June 1314, that Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots, routed the English army under Edward II after they had gone there to relieve the besieged Stirling Castle.

Now a heritage site, Bannockburn – just two miles from Stirling, will feature battle performances from Clanranald, who have starred in major Hollywood films such as Gladiator and Robin Hood.

Also featured as part of a two-day festival on June 28-29, will be a medieval encampment to take you back to 1314, a Food and Drink village showcasing the best of Scottish produce and big name Scottish music acts Dougie Maclean and Julie Fowlis.

Clanranald, who are regarded as the world's leading battle performance group, are famous for their expertly choreographed performances and as well as appearances in Gladiator and Robin Hood, another major Hollywood film in which they featured was Thor II.

Apart from reliving the battle at Bannockburn Live visitors will also get the chance to step back in time to June 1314 in the medieval encampment and discover their ancestry in the clan village featuring 40 clans from across the UK.

There will also be a Storyville, with theatre, storytelling, stand-up comedy and debates, and a taste bud-tingling Food and Drink village where you can enjoy the very best in Scottish produce including whiskies, real ales, sea-food and meet the producers.

And if all that's not enough, Scottish music artists will take to the Music Arena stage with headline acts Dougie MacLean (Saturday night) and Julie Fowlis (Sunday night). Other acts to appear include Rura, The Deadly Winters, Treacherous Orchestra and Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire amongst others.

To book visit www.bannockburnlive.com or you can buy tickets from Visitor Information Centres in Scotland. Ticket prices are adult £20, child £12.50, family (2 adults and 2 children) £55, while children under-5 go free.
