DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons revealed Warriors had been "given a short rest period away from the club" during the break in play caused by Covid-19.

Premiership Rugby joined many other professional sports competitions in suspending play on the back of government advice regarding the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The global pandemic is steadily taking a grip in the UK with people told to avoid mass gatherings and even pubs, clubs and cinemas as health officials seek to stop the spread.

A message from Solomons posted on the Worcester Warriors website declared his support for the call to cease play until the weekend of April 24 and revealed players would be following their own training regimes for the time being.

"Everyone at Warriors is disappointed that the Gallagher Premiership season is taking an enforced break but we fully support the decision to postpone all matches until April 20," said Solomons.

"The coronavirus pandemic poses a threat to public health that has not been experienced in recent times and it is only sensible that all steps are taken to prevent its spread.

"When lives and livelihoods are under threat it would be wrong to continue playing rugby and continue playing sport and exposing our supporters, players and staff to unnecessary risk.

"In the short term the players, coaching and support staff have been given a short rest period away from the club.

"All players have been given individual training programmes before resuming full training ahead of the hoped-for return to action against Bristol Bears next month.

"We will continue to be guided by the advice of Public Health England, the UK government and Premiership Rugby and all staff will adhere to the latest medical advice on the disease.

"We hope you and your families stay safe during this challenging and worrying time and look forward to playing in front of you at Sixways as soon as possible."

Warriors released a statement following the announcement on Monday evening.

It read: “Warriors can confirm that all matches under the auspices of Premiership Rugby will be postponed with immediate effect for five weeks until Monday, April 20.

“The home fixtures affected are the Premiership matches against Gloucester and Harlequins and Cavaliers’ Premiership Rugby Shield match against Gloucester.

“We appreciate that this will cause some inconvenience but the safety and well-being of all visitors to Sixways, our staff and players and the wider community is of paramount importance.”
