“OUTSTANDING” goal-kicker Duncan Weir received glowing praise from boss Alan Solomons after firing Worcester Warriors to victory over Bristol Bears.

Jono Lance was picked ahead of Weir for the Gallagher Premiership clash at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

But an injury to Lance in the opening three minutes saw Solomons call upon Weir and the Scotland international did not disappoint.

Weir converted all three tries, two from the touchline and landed two penalties in a 12-point haul that helped Warriors edge Bristol 27-25.

“He played tremendously and responded as I would expect him to respond which was in a positive fashion.

“I thought his overall game was terrific but I thought his goal-kicking was absolutely outstanding.

“His kicking was the difference. We gave them that last try but at the end of the day there are two points between the two teams and Duncan kicked every single kick.”

Lance who has recently overcome a partial stress fracture to his back was making his first start since October. But the Aussie suffered a blow to the head in his opening tackle.

Solomons said: “Jono had a head injury assessment which he failed so he will have to go through the return-to-play protocol.

“It’s a similar situation to Francois Venter who came off early in our previous home game.”

Lance is now a doubt for Warriors’ European Challenge Cup quarter-final against Harlequins at Sixways on Saturday (8.15pm).

But Solomons is also able to turn to 21-year-old stand-off Jamie Shillcock who has not played for Worcester since injuring his ankle in the defeat at Pau in early December.

“Shilly is a good young player,” Solomons said.

“He does not have the experience of the other two lads as Duncan has played 27 Test matches for Scotland and Jono has played a lot of Super Rugby and had a couple of months with us here last season. They are really invaluable to the team.

“The nine and 10 are critical players and having said I thought Francois Hougaard had a very good game on Saturday.”
