IN-FORM Worcester Warriors fly-half Duncan Weir has missed out on a place in Scotland’s 40-man squad for the autumn internationals.

After an injury-hit 2017-18 campaign with Edinburgh Weir has made an immediate impact at Warriors, quickly establishing himself as their first-choice number 10.

Only Leicester Tigers’ George Ford and Saracens’ Owen Farrell have scored more points in the Gallagher Premiership than the 27-year-old this season as he is tied third with Harlequins’ Marcus Smith on 61.

Weir scored a brace of tries in a match of the match display in Warriors’ 44-37 victory at Leicester Tigers and landed all seven conversions in the 52-7 thrashing of Bristol Bears.

But the 27-cap stand-off’s hopes of making his first appearance for his country since March 2017 next month have been dashed.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has selected three uncapped players in Scarlets back-row Blade Thomson, Exeter Chiefs lock Sam Skinner and Glasgow Warriors centre Sam Johnson.

Racing 92 star Finn Russell, Edinburgh ace Blair Kinghorn and Glasgow duo Adam Hastings and Peter Horne are Townsend’s options at fly-half.

Scotland face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, November 3 before hosting Fiji, South Africa and Argentina on the consecutive Saturdays that follow.

Townsend, said: “We now begin the last 12 months of our preparations for Rugby World Cup 2019 with four Test matches in four weeks, a similar challenge to the one we’ll face in Japan.

“We’ve named a 40-man group for this campaign, which highlights the quality of player that is now available to us and the competition for places.

“It also enables us to welcome more players into our training environment and hopefully give a few more players a taste of Test match rugby.”
