BROMSGROVE based Great Britain cycling star Jessica Varnish was one of the athletes honoured at the annual Sports Awards ceremony.

The ceremony and awards, hosted by Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, celebrate the wealth of achievement and dedication from all sectors of sport across the two counties.

Varnish, who rides for Halesowen Athletic and Cycling Club, was given the junior female sports ppersonality of the year trophy.

Also honoured at the ceremony, held at Worcester Rugby Club last week, was Chris Hargreaves of Bromsgrove Rugby Club, who won the Sport England community sports award.

And Droitwich Spa High School won the school sports award for its football education programme.

Stephen Brewster, partnership director said: “Congratulations go to all our winners and nominees. “Local sport would not exist without the huge amount of hard work and dedication - mostly voluntary, given by coaches, officials and volunteers.”

“The Sports Awards recognise their work and success as well as celebrate the incredible talent of our young players, performers and athletes. “We also hope the awards will inspire them to aim high and with Beijing under our belt London 2012 is on the horizon.”
