BROMSGROVE Sporting's pre-season friendlies continued with a hard-won but useful victory against Walsall Wood.

Wood were leading the Midland Football League Premier Division when last season was abruptly halted in March and can consider themselves unlucky not to have been promoted to one level below Sporting.

Gift Mussa scored the winner for Southern League Premier Central outfit Bromsgrove, with Walsall 'keeper James Wren performing well for the opposition to keep the Rouslers down to just the one goal.

Chris Lait and Josh Quaynor both had efforts saved early on which were followed by Mikey Taylor capitalising on a short back pass before hitting straight at the 'keeper from close range, 28 minutes in.

The 51st minute saw Bromsgrove’s Kieren Westwood hit a free kick from the edge of the area which Wren tipped onto the crossbar.

But Westwood would be involved in the game’s only goal seven minutes later, as another free kick of his was whipped into the path of defender Harry Higginson, who headed the ball across goal, allowing Mussa to tap in from six yards.

Sporting were due to play Highgate United away on Tuesday before hosting former tenants Worcester City in a friendly tomorrow (Thursday) evening at the Victoria Ground.

However, because of Government regulations only 300 supporters will be allowed to watch the game for which tickets will be on sale at the ground today (Wednesday) from 11am-8pm.

On Bank Holiday Saturday, the Rouslers travel to Hinckley to play Leicester Road and on Holiday Monday there is an away match with Sutton Coldfield Town, both 3pm kick-offs.

Meanwhile, Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies play their first match in a friendly at the Victoria Ground against local rivals Meadow Park on Sunday with a 2pm kick-off. Admission is pay on the gate.
