SAMURAI Judo Club sent six boys to the Bristol Open Championships and returned with six medals including three golds.

Jordan Phillips made his Samurai competition debut in the under 27 kilos category, his first contest was a close match against an older and more experienced player.

HE lost on a single score but won his other two contests in the group stage to qualify second in the pool.

He won the semi-final convincingly but lost the final to the same player who have beaten him in the group stage.

His older brother Luke, also making his Samurai debut, had his toughest contest in his first match, but won that comfortably with a series of good throws.

He took gold by winning all of his remaining contests by maximum score including some good transition to groundwork after throwing his opponents.

Harrison Flello reached the semi-final of his category before losing but came back well to win the bronze medal.

Isaac Sobolowski was much younger than his opponents but reached the final of his category and gave a good account of himself before losing and having to settle for the silver medal.

In the older juniors section, Samurai fielded just two players, James Harrison and Martin Allen.

Harrison, aged 12, was up against players up to three years older but he showed excellent skill to win his three contests and take the gold medal.

Allen also performed well, never letting his opponents, all higher grades than himself, get into the contests and winning all of his matches by maximum points to take the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Sophie Davis went to the Droitwich Open Championships, where she won five out of her six contests, including several girls a lot heavier than herself, to take the silver medal, only losing to a Walsall player in the final.
