SWIMMERS in Droitwich will have to wait a little longer for a popular Lido to re-open.

The Droitwich Lido has been closed during the coronavirus crisis and it is not currently known when it can re-open.

Regional manager for Wychavon Leisure, Tim Kirkham, said the Lido is still waiting for government guidance before making concrete plans to allow swimmers in again.

He said: “I can’t say a huge amount at this point, we are still waiting for Boris to say when pools can reopen, so we are trying to work out how we can work it out, just like every swimming pool.”

Mr Kirkham added many pools and leisure centres are worried about the future long-term, especially as the season for outdoor pools is short.

He said: “It all depends what kind of organisation you are. With Wychavon Leisure we are alright, but obviously, like any business, we cannot stay closed forever and a day, we have still got bills to pay.”

Mr Kirkham said the team at Droitwich Lido is working on a plan for re-opening, but is still waiting for official advice. He added: “We were ready to re-open on July 4, but obviously Boris said we can’t, so it is really frustrating for anybody involved in this.

“We have got lovely leisure centres and and we wanted to get people in. It is a cracking place and we only have a short season so obviously the decision has to be made soon.”

Mr Kirkham also thanked Wychavon District Council and the Friends of Droitwich Lido, who have been helping the Lido for years with fundraising and grants.

He said: “Without the support of groups like these, the Lido would have faded away long ago. The community support in Droitwich is really special. We hope to be back to normal next year when we can open as we normally do but we just don’t know what is going to happen.”

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin said she has written to the government asking when pools and spas can re-open. She said: “I’ve asked for Government guidance on what plans there may be to allow swimming, gyms, spa and beauty treatments to resume.

“If hair can be cut in a ‘covid-safe’ way, I am interested in hearing what the latest thinking is on allowing similar services to return – particularly beauticians who can wear masks to carry out their work, swimming pools where chlorine is used and other healthy activities that bring in billions into the economy.”
