AN ENVIRONMENTAL charity has staged an event to raise awareness over the future of the planet’s oceans.

Greenpeace members from the county gathered in The Pod at the Crowngate Shopping Centre in Worcester on Saturday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for Worcestershire Greenpeace said: “This is a national campaign by Greenpeace today to get the Government to tackle the future of ocean habitats.

“We want 30 per cent of oceans to be protected sanctuaries by 2030.”

David Burley, from Malvern, was one of the visitors at the two hour long event, which started at 2pm.

Mr Burley said: “I’ve come here today to show my support to Greenpeace and the work they do.”

Thomas Godfrey, three, from Worcester enjoyed having his face painted by a member of Greenpeace.

His mum, Rebecca Godfrey, 30, from Worcester, said: “I’ve watched all the David Attenborough television documentaries so understand the threat towards the environment.

“It’s not me I’m worried about but the future for my kid.”

Louis Stephen, Worcester City Councillor for the Green Party, said: “I’m here to offer my support for Greenpeace to lobby the government to tackle ocean sanctuaries, protecting ecosystems from things such as fishing.”

Artwork showing various oceanic ecosystems was also on display as well as an environmental documentary.
