SCHOOL children have supported a campaign to stop a proposal to build 450 next to a 6000-year-old wood.

Students from Holy Redeemer School have written letters and drawn pictures to show their concern about the proposal to build houses on fields bordering Tiddesley Wood in Pershore.

Jayne Perks, a concerned resident who has opened a pop up shop in Pershore for people to get involved with the campaign objecting to the proposal said: "People are finding it almost impossible to log their objections online. I managed to open a pop up shop for people to call in.

"One of the pupils (at Holy Redeemer School) came in with her mum. There is a lot of anger building up against the proposal. The adults are supposed to submit forms with their opinions by Monday afternoon.

"But this is all about the children who have been forgotten about and it's their future that will be affected. There has been woodland on that site for six-thousand years. To harm that beautiful ancient land for profit is not on.

"The children have done some beautiful letters. They all love Tiddesley Wood and are all very concerned about the harm the development will cause. They are worried about the wildlife. A lot of it is protected. It is a very special place. These children have got behind this campaign. They want to voice their opinions."

The proposal is part of the South Worcestershire Development Plan. Two protests have taken place.

Town Councillor Val Wood said: "It is essential that residents make comments via the official portals in order that their voices can be counted. This proposed destruction of our green spaces must be stopped before it has a permanent and devastating effect on our ancient Tiddesley Wood which is not only a triple SSI but has one of the greatest diversity of species in the UK. These will be at risk from potential noise, light and air pollution not to mention prowling pets which could destroy ground nesting birds and small mammals."
