Proposals to create a new riverside park for Worcester are to be warmly welcomed.

Although the stretch of the eastern bank of the Severn between Worcester Bridge and the cathedral is generally speaking in good shape, further up the river is a different story.

Opening up the riverside past the racecourse and all the way up to Gheluvelt Park will be an improvement which will lift the whole city and will be appreciated by residents and visitors alike.

The river, the longest in Great Britain at 220 miles, is one of the reasons that the city came into being, and an asset so closely intertwined with Worcester's history is one that should be prized.

A new riverside park will be something that the city can be proud of, that will mark Worcester out as distinctive, and which the city's tourism promoters will be able to make much of.

Although the project is still in its infancy, the proposal seems to be meeting with public approval, and it would be the right thing to do for the city council to approve the proposal and to make the riverside park into a reality.
