A TEACHING assistant who goes “above and beyond” has been nominated for Support Staff of the Year Award.

Sarah Guise, who has spent 14 years working at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award based on her dedication and passion within her role.

Miss Guise, 45, is a teaching assistant for children with additional educational needs at the school in Timberdine Avenue, Worcester.

Miss Guise said: “It’s amazing to be nominated and really kind. I really like teaching the children and it feels great when the pupils take away what they have learnt and get something from it.”

Miss Guise’s role is to teach the pupils Level 1 and 2 Food Skills, Entry Level Science and English, support students on a one on one basis and acts as a mentor for the children to develop their spelling, maths and social skills.

Miss Guise’s teaching technique is to deliver lessons with a hands-on approach. She incorporates trips into the lessons and allows the children to develop their life skills and gain independence.

Muriel Fitzer, who nominated Miss Guise, said: “Sarah is an outstanding teaching assistant whose unique style, dedication and professionalism ensure all her jobs and responsibilities are carried out go above and beyond what is expected.

“She makes her lessons fun and focuses on differentiation to make information easier for students to retain. Sarah has boundless energy and an unwavering commitment and passion for her varied and busy role in school. She is ethical, culturally sensitive, kind, honest and attentive. Sarah encourages enthusiasm for learning but, also helps students develop their problem-solving skills to help become independent thinkers."
