A MUM from Worcester walked barefoot on hot coals to support the charity that has made a world of difference to her son.

Catriona Deane, her friend Judy Marshall-Watkin and Catriona’s younger son Eoin took part in a sponsored firewalk and raised more than £400 for National Star, a charity which supports young people with complex disabilities and more sponsorship is expected in the coming days.

They were among 64 people who took part in the event which raised more than £5,000 for National Star and more sponsorship is expected in the coming days.

“My son Conor is in his third year at National Star and loving it,” said Catriona. “He’s become more inquisitive and interested in things and his communication has taken off in a big way and he is starting to use the ipad to communicate with us.”

Conor, who is aged 22, has severe learning difficulties and is not able to speak. When he arrived at National Star, he could use some sign language.

Working with the speech and language team at National Star, Conor is developing his communication skills and learning to use a communication device.

“I’d love Conor to be able to talk to me,” said Catriona. “That’s what sold National Star to me. There’s a lot more going on in Conor’s head than he can get out to us.”

Catriona said she decided to sign up for the firewalk because it was something different.

“I signed up because I was bored. When I read about it I thought I could do that!” she said. “And it was a way I could support National Star.”

Firewalking experts Blaze ran the adrenalin-fuelled event at the National Star campus in Ullenwood. After a motivational two-hour training session the brave souls walked 20ft over hot coals.

“Fundraising is vital to National Star’s development,” said Gill Henry, Head of Fundraising.

“The generosity of the companies and individuals who support us, enables more young people with complex disabilities to benefit from National Star’s specialist environments, facilities and equipment.”

National Star, which has its base in Ullenwood, also runs support and services for young people in Hereford and Wales.
