AN EX-army chef has been nominated for the Unsung Hero Award and been described as a positive member of staff at a primary school.

Keith Smith, site manager from Our Lady Queen Of Peace Catholic Primary School, in Bransford Road, Worcester has been nominated for the Worcestershire Education Award.

Mr Smith, aged 65 said: “It feels amazing to be nominated – although I am thoroughly embarrassed and completely speechless. I just do what I do and get on with it. I didn’t expect anything like this, I am gobsmacked.”

Mr Smith’s role involves keeping the school secure, manages the cleaners and ensures that the school environment is maintained. Although it is not included in Mr Smith’s job description, he enjoys helping the pupils in the forest school by enriching the children's experience with campfires, den building and cooking.

As an ex-army chef, Mr Smith takes great delight in creating cooking opportunities and he can often be found baking bread or making chutney with groups of children. Mr Smith has been working at the primary school since September 2011.

He said: “I enjoy getting involved with the pupils. I am a glass half full sort of person. I go out in all weather conditions every morning – even the Beast from the East didn’t keep me away.”

In the nomination, Jo McGrath wrote: “Keith is very modest and does not realise the significance of his role. The school would be a much less dynamic place if Keith wasn't working there. He is always cheerful, willing and positive and will help staff, children and parents to ensure their experience of school is enjoyable.

"Keith should win this award because he is a completely dedicated member of the school team who always goes above and beyond the remit of his role as site manager."
