WITH the transformation of the railway arches and area around The Hive on the horizon, the riverside cafe on the banks of the Severn has the potential to be a thriving business.

Soon to re-open as Cafe Viaduct, new boss Alex Daw could find his establishment in a prime location. Many people who work on the south side of the river, as well as students at the university’s St John’s Campus, would welcome somewhere to enjoy a coffee or lunch that bit closer than the city centre.

As reported earlier this month, the city council intends to turn the Victorian railway arches into something of a culture hub, with arty businesses and independent food and drink shops based there, and the riverside cafe could benefit from the revamp of that area.

As many people have said many times before, Worcester needs to make more of its riverside in order to draw in more visitors and create a true destination. Over the years, there has been talk of a hotel and wider development at the racecourse but nothing seems to materialise.

Let’s hope that’s about to change.
