'‘WORCESTER’S Pavarotti’ Luke Swatman is gaining new followers after a successful audition on national TV programme, The Voice UK.

Five million viewers tuned in to see the 35-year-old from St John's perform on Saturday’s show.

Mr Swatman has his first taste of celebrity after his rendition of Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, filmed at a pub karaoke, went viral on social media.

He enjoyed local, national and international attention and has now been chosen to go through to the next round of the hit show.

Hinting he had “something different to offer to the coaches,” in a video package, he went on to give a pitch perfect version of Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Il Mare Calmo Della Sera’, gaining wild applause and, crucially, coaches and singers Olly Murs and Jennifer Hudson both turned their seats to show they wanted him on their team.

Mr Swatman told the Worcester News: “It was really strange to see myself on TV.

"The reaction has been amazing. I have had so many messages - my phone blew up.

"I want to thank everybody who has sent messages of support.

"Before you audition, the backstage crew remind you it will be seen by millions and it is a great platform, good exposure.”

Mr Swatman deliberated over who to choose as the two coaches fought hard to get him on their team, with Olly even singing opera.

But Mr Swatman eventually decided to go with American singer Jennifer.

“The shock was when Olly turned, I didn’t think he would,” the singer said.

“Before I went on I decided it would be between Tom Jones, and Jennifer, if they turned. I had to go with Jen - she is a great recording artist, most suited to me.”

Mr Swatman said the whole experience had so far been “surreal”, as not being professional meant he was now back working as a commercial controller, while preparing for the competition’s next stage.

“It is like living a double life,” he said.

“The battle round is going to be a daunting challenge, but exciting.”

Bookies have already priced Mr Swatman at 20/1 to win the show.
