STAFF at the city's House of Fraser still don't know whether the department store will close down, the Worcester News understands.

Staff at the store in Crowngate Shopping Centre had expected the branch to close in January but have been told that's no longer the case. But they are said to be in the dark about whether the store will remain open permanently or just close at a later date, and whether their jobs will be saved.

In June, the company announced that up to 6,000 jobs were under threat nationally and that 31 of its 59 stores are set to shut across the UK and Ireland as part of a rescue plan, with the Worcester store amongst those to close.

But in August, hopes were boosted with news of a £90million takeover. Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct agreed to buy the chain, turning some House of Fraser stores into Sports Direct outlets and rebrand others under the Flannels fascia, while others will remain under the House of Fraser brand.
