A CHARITY which combats loneliness in the city will be celebrating its tenth year of helping the community.

Make Time Friendship Group is a social club which encourages people in Worcester and surrounding areas to get involved in social activities.

The charity aims to help people to build on self-esteem and to make new friendships beyond their usual networks.

Jenny Manchester, from Worcester, established the group in 2009 after it began with only two members.

It has since expanded and now has 30 regular members attending the sessions, aged from 45 to early 90s.

Mrs Manchester has suffered from a long-term illness which persuaded her to start the group and turn her life around.

She added: “When I got ill I felt like my world had finished. Before, my mind was focused on dying. Now I am living, and I have some amazing people throughout.

“It gives me something to do. I do not think 'what if' anymore. It is so rewarding, and it cuts out loneliness by bringing people together from all walks of life to get out and about.

“These activities aim to make sure those who are living alone will feel part of the wider community. We offer support for people who find it hard to socialise with others, ensuring that all members have something enjoyable and stimulating to look forward to every week.”

Make Time Friendship Group offers support for people who find it difficult to meet and socialise with others due to a lack of confidence and low self-esteem.

Mrs Manchester said: “We vary the activities as everyone is different with a variety of interests and with different backgrounds. Seeing friendships blossom in the group is so special.

“We have had one lad who has been with us for eight years. He has a social disorder. When he first starting coming to the club he never spoke to anyone. Now he has flourished and is so much more confident.”

The group meets each Wednesday in Worcestershire sheltered housing, Sharman Close, Worcester, to take part in an array of activities.

The activities include day trips, educational guest speakers and meals out.

It is £2 per session to attend, which includes tea or coffee and contributes to the funding of the activities provided.
