PLANS to introduce parking charges at a popular city park have encountered opposition.

City councillor Richard Udall is against the proposals for Worcester Woods Country Park.

He thinks the move would deter poorer residents from using the facility and harm trade at the Orchard Cafe, which is next to the car park.

But Worcestershire County Council cabinet member Lucy Hodgson, who is behind the plans, said the charges would raise £140,000 a year.

Cllr Udall said: "The proposals will have a damming impact on the Orchard Cafe and would restrict access to Worcester Woods to those who can afford it.

"The consequences would be very damaging to the future viability of the park. I understand the need to raise revenue, I also understand the car park is abused by people visiting the hospital.

"But to implement such a charge without consultation and without seeking the views of users is cruel and upsetting."

Cllr Udall suggested restricting free parking at the site to two hours a day to stop drivers from using it as a hospital car park.

He also encouraged the council to open the land up for events, such as markets, to raise money.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for communities, said: "With financial pressures growing on the county council, we are proposing to introduce a parking charge at Worcester Woods Country Park, which will generate around £140,000 each year.

"Most sites with a similar range of facilities around the county currently either charge for entry or charge for car parking.

"The charges being proposed for Worcester Woods are similar to other visitor attractions and represent typical visitor lengths of stay.

"If approved, the charges will be introduced next summer."

Cllr Hodgson will make a decision on the plans on November 21.

Under the plans, parking at the site will be free for 15 minutes and then £1 for one hour, £2 for two, £3 for four, £7 for over four and £60 for an annual pass.
