A DATE ended up costing hundreds of pounds for a drunk driver with no licence, who attempted to drive a car with slashed tyres.

Dylan Campbell was banned from driving and ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling more than £600 after appearing at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Kerry Lovegrove, prosecuting, said police pulled over his Mini Cooper on Canalside at 3.15am on October 20.

Miss Lovegrove said: “Tyres were slashed and the standard of driving was poor. Police stopped him and smelt alcohol on his breath.”

Miss Lovegrove said he later gave a reading of 56mcg in 100ml of breath to police, above the legal limit of 35mcg. She added officers checked his details revealing he had also had his licence revoked, and had no insurance.

Paul Stanley, defending, explained the 32-year-old had driven to Worcester to meet a date and when he went back to the vehicle he found tyres were slashed and attempted to drive, when the police spotted him.

Mr Stanley explained Campbell, a father-of-four from Grange Rise, Birmingham, wasn’t aware his licence had been revoked after receiving six penalty points within two years of passing his test in 2015.

Mr Stanley said: “He accepts responsibility, and for having no insurance.

“He will have to do his test again. He had something to drink that evening.”

Mr Stanley added Campbell would be losing his job so appealed for the financial penalty to be kept low “as money will now become an issue for him”.

Magistrates gave Campbell a 15 month driving ban, which will be reduced by 15 weeks if he successful completes a drink drive awareness course. Campbell was also fined £460 and ordered to pay costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £46 - a total of £641. There was no separate penalty for the licence or insurance offences.

Chairman of the magistrates bench Wendy Coggan explained that as there was no evidence Campbell would be losing his job, they had to take his current £24,000 a year salary into account.
