Burcot Garden Club

The club met recently and was very well attended, with another new member joining us.

The subject for April was "Pinks", a talk given by Sue Russell. Sue has a great love for the dianthus family, and with her husband used to run their own nursery in Mendlesham, Suffolk, specialising in them. She introduced the subject by giving us a very interesting history of the plant, explaining that the word pink doesn’t originate because of the colour of the plant, but because the edge is frilly as if it has been cut by pinking shears. She went on to show how they were developed by crossing them, to exaggerate various qualities so that today there is a wide range of different cultivars. Indeed she herself has developed a new popular strain by the name of Mendlesham. Afterwards we all enjoyed refreshments and a chance to chat.

Next month, the subject for the evening is "Plants in containers – vegetables or flowers" and will be presented by Hilary Twigg, a full time lecturer at Pershore College.

The club meets every first Wednesday of the month at Burcot Village Hall at 7.30pm.
