A BROMSGROVE social club dating back to the 1920s is appealing for help to re-erect a building damaged by storms earlier this year.

Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club, in Westonhall Road, has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Its outdoor building, which housed toilets and showering facilities, fell victim to Storms Ciara and Dennis which struck just weeks before the enforced shutdown.

Damage to the roof caused internal leakage and the building is now in need of urgent repair or re-build.

The venue, which is set in large 10-acre grounds, has a tradition of playing host to a wide variety of local festivals, community gatherings and sporting activities.

However, it relies on its outdoor facilities to meet the needs of people attending and taking part in these events.

With reduced income, due to the closure of the venue for the past few months, there are insufficient funds to finance the necessary repairs.

Manager Mark Goddard has now set up a ‘gofundme.com’ fundraising page, with the help of staff James Maycroft and Natasha Jones.

To make a donation, visit facebook.com/StokePriorClub/ and click the Go Fund Me link.

There is a £10,000 target and depending on how much is raised they will repair, renovate, or replace the building.

Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club started life back in the 1920s as a wooden building built by the workers of the nearby ICI factory.

It eventually became a members’ club but, in the 1980s, the building burned down and portacabins were stationed on the car park to keep the club going for members until the existing brick building could be built.

The club was sold to its current owners Wilf Goddard and Nigel Meredith in 2001. It has been managed by Wilf’s grandson, Mark Goddard, since 2015.
