THE River Severn at Bewdley is set to rise even higher, the Environment Agency has warned.

Roads across the town have been closed today after Storm Dennis struck the district over the weekend, causing river levels to reach highs of 4.7m on Sunday morning.

But it seems the worst is yet to come, as the Environment Agency warns residents that the river is set to climb higher over the next few days due to persistent rainfall.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said earlier today the government's "greatest concern" is for towns along the River Severn like Shrewsbury, Tewkesbury and Bewdley.

Flood warnings remains in place and, although the River Severn has fallen slightly since Sunday, it is expected to rise higher and peak at around 5.2m in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The highest recorded level in Bewdley was 5.56m in November 2000.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "River levels have fallen but are expected to rise again at the Bewdley river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

"The access road to Lickhill Caravan Park and the Walkway may be affected, and property and gardens flooded at Severnside, Stourport."

They added: "We expect river levels to remain high for the next few days. Further scattered showers are expected for the next 48 hours.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences."
