DUDLEY South MP Mike Wood has said he cannot fully accept Theresa May's Brexit deal in it's current form.

Mr Wood was the only MP in the Black Country to campaign for Brexit.

Prime Minister Theresa May has until next Tuesday's crunch Commons vote to persuade enough MPs to back her Brexit deal.

Mr Wood has set out his current position, but acknowledged this may change if the prime minister alters the controversial Northern Ireland backstop arrangement.

He said: "Most of the agreement is actually quite good but it's not all what I would have wanted.

"I don't think I can support the backstop provisions as they stand."

The backstop arrangement has proved a sticking point for Brexiteers who fear the it could see the UK stuck indefinitely in a customs arrangement with the EU.

He said that the backstop provisions place the UK in a 'really weak position'.

He added: "We would be left with a lot of of the burden without enjoying the benefits."

However, he noted 'things can change immensely over the next few days' regarding the details of the deal.

Despite his reservations about the deal, Mr Wood is adamant that he supports Theresa May as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party.

He explained: "I don't think anything would be improved by changing prime minister. The Conservative Party would be stuck in three months of a leadership election.

He added: "We should be getting it [Brexit] over the line."
