AROUND 40 handouts a week on average are being given out by the Ledbury Food Bank, according to new statistics, and with Christmas approaching organisers are getting ready to help even more people.

The recent AGM at the food bank’s base, in St Katherine’s, heard that in the year up to the end of October, the food bank issued over 2,000 food handouts.

Food Bank spokesman Martin Ham said: “Large as the number is, everyone was aware that there is still a mountain to climb to find more of those who are in need.”

The fear is that there are are still individuals and families who going hungry who are still to contact the food bank.

Now volunteers are pulling out all the stops to make sure that no one coming forward over Christmas will go without help.

Mr Ham told the Ledbury Reporter: “The food bank will be open at St Katherine's just before Christmas on Wednesday December 19 and Friday the December 21 from 10am to noon and all can be assured that if they need food, they will get it.

“We know that there will be more people coming for food and we have made sure that they will get enough food.

"Christmas is a very special time and eating well is an important part of Christmas celebrations. The Food Bank is there to make sure that every family can have all they need.”

Mr Ham added: “If you have not been to the food bank before, please don’t hesitate to call in. If you don’t have transport, please try to get help from a neighbour.

"You’ll all get a warm and friendly welcome.

“If you have transport and know of someone who is struggling and can bring them to the food bank, then please do."

The food bank hosted a a special day this Wednesday, December 5, when all those coming for food were offered “something extra and festive” – like chocolates or crackers.

Mr Ham said: “Dozens of locals have been most generous and given Christmassy items.”
