WELSH traditional band Allan Yn Y Fan are celebrating their 22nd year on the road, followed by a major European tour this autumn.

But they won’t be crossing the channel until they’ve made a stop at Ledbury’s Market Theatre.

A spokesman said: “Since their formation in 1996 Allan Yn Y Fan has carved out a reputation as one of Wales’ foremost traditional bands, with an impressive catalogue of concert, festival and recorded work, as well as a number of European tours to their credit.

“The multi-instrumental sextet, as famed now for their beautiful vocals as for their fiery instrumentals, breathe new life into the traditional songs and music of Wales as well as writing their own tunes inspired by their homeland and travels.

“Renowned for blending traditional Welsh music with their own compositions, Allan Yn Y Fan are sure to capture your heart and stir emotions deep inside you. Harnessing all the power and mystery of Celtic tradition, this show will delight audiences young and old.”

A new single, released on the Steam Pie label, consists of two tracks ‘Ym Mhontypridd’ and ‘Gorthrwm y Gweithiwr’. The latter, which the band believes to be the first ever recording of the song, refers to the struggles of the workers, versus their Beaufort, Ebbw Vale ironmasters in mid 19th century Wales.

Both tour print and CD single feature the band in front of William Edward’s iconic single arch bridge crossing the River Taff in Pontypridd. Built in 1756, it was for 40 years Britain’s longest single span bridge.

And spookily enough, the name of the tour is actually ‘Bridges not Walls’.

The date for the diary is Saturday, December 1, from 7.30pm at the Market Theatre.
