THE annual Civic Service in Ledbury was called a Community Celebration this year, and that is precisely what it was, despite an apparent change in tradition.

The event took place recently, as usual, in Ledbury Parish Church, St Michael and All Angels.

It was presided over by Cllr Nina Shields, who earlier this year moved away from another tradition by taking the title of Town Council Chairman, instead of Town Mayor.

The packed congregation was welcomed by the Revd Keith Hilton-Turvey.

The congregation included representatives from many local organisations, societies, schools, clubs, visiting civic dignitaries and several councillors. Secretary of the Ledbury Stromstad Twinning Association, Jill Jupp, along with Chair, Caroline Alexander accompanied Swedish guests, Peter Heie, Chairman of Strömstad Kommun and his wife Ulrika, who is also an MP in the Stockholm Parliament.

Ledbury Rotarian Jan Long, who also attended, said: "During the joyous and uplifting service were songs, poems and readings performed by pupils and students from local schools, Ledbury and Eastnor Brownies and the Youth Council.

"Rotarian David Houghton gave an address that had as its theme the importance of community and fittingly the Ledbury Community Choir was accompanied by a musical selection from Philip Holland."

Mrs Long added: "Adding a splash of colour with his red town crier's outfit was Clive Gunn and the beautifully attired Carnival Princess and attendants."

Following the final prayers and hymns, Nina Shields concluded with a speech thanking the community of Ledbury for their support and work throughout the years.
