LEDBURY'S Recreation Ground is set to finally get its domed-roofed aluminium mini-theatre, as a shelter for young people and a new venue for outdoor entertainment.

Veteran town councillor, Tony Bradford has been battling since the New Year to get the final thumbs up from the town council, and now he has cause to celebrate.

Cllr Bradford said: "It's wonderful news. We have finally got to the point where we have realised the mistake of trying to get something cheaper there. This will be an wonderful asset for the town."

The new shelter could be a focus for art works by young people and, with power points, for live music events, it can also double as bandstand.

The aluminium structure will be strong, but moveable; so the very best place for the new shelter could be found by trial and error.

The cost is expected to be in the region of £10,000; but other options looked at by councillors would have exceeded that.

One option for a new shelter worked out at £3000 per seat, when six seats were required.

The chairman of Ledbury Town Council, Cllr Nina Shields said: "I can now confirm that the shelter is on order. The location is as recommended by Cllr Bradford, specifically to ensure that the CCTV will cover both the old and the new shelter.

" Cllr Bradford has worked hard both researching and consulting on this and everyone was pleased that the most popular option was also the best value. The shelter will be on order very shortly and we aim to get it installed as soon as possible."

The Recreation Ground has been cited as a problem area for anti-social behaviour in the past, and so the new shelter's location will be covered by CCTV.
