A new survey conducted by Nutmeg found that 1 in 5 UK workers would take a pay cut to work locally.

In fact, almost 1 in 12 people surveyed had already changed their job to cut the time spent commuting.

And it’s no surprise; Nutmeg’s survey also found that the average UK worker spends 10,634 hours commuting throughout their lifetime. That’s 443 days! The cost of funding this is £50,000 per lifetime - and that’s without taking into account the rising cost of petrol and rail fare.

Motors.co.uk got similar findings to Nutmeg, in a report that stated 67% of drivers would take a pay cut to work locally and save on their commute.

Phill Jones, director of motors.co.uk, said “the people of Britain have clearly reached the edge of their frustration with the amount of money they sacrifice each year on commuting costs.”

Time to start recruiting locally?

For employers, these figures aren’t good. The cost of commuting could be driving away talented employees who would otherwise want to work for your business. He question is – do you want them anyway?

Perhaps it’s time for employers to start recruiting locally, too. There are huge arguments to suggest it’s beneficial to keep local people in local jobs.

There’s no doubt that local employees are happier ones. They don’t have the stress of a daily commute. Even better, working locally installs a greater sense of community spirit, which increases morale and productivity.

After all, 20,000 people spending £5 locally every day adds an extra £52m to the local economy. It’s much better for employers to do this than pay people from other communities who will spend the money elsewhere….with a good chunk going on transportation!
