One of Worcester’s defeated Tory councillors says voters were reacting to the national political scene.

James Stanley lost his seat in the Warndon and Elbury Park ward, with Labour’s Jill Desayrah, Naz Hussain and Ed Kimberley taking all three seats.

Only one Conservative kept his seat on the city council - Alan Amos in the Lower Wick and Pitmaston Ward.

Mr Stanley said: “This is the nature of politics. Three years ago I stood in this very room and won both city and county council elections, but this is democracy.

“Overwhemingly this is people reacting to the national scene. I think we’ve had an incredibly difficult couple of years, people have had their say and you have to respect that.

“What’s most important is that this is an exercise in democracy and the people of Worcester have had their say.”
