A NEW Covid testing station will soon be open in the city.

The testing site in the city is planned to be in place at the university arena car park and should be operational by Monday, November 2. An existing drive-through test centre is currently in place at County Hall.

The move was welcomed by city councillor Richard Udall, who represents St John’s ward.

He said he had been told about the centre after contacting Worcestershire’s director of public health, Dr Kathryn Cobain, when residents complained about being unable to get a coronavirus test from County Hall due to their lack of transport.

Cllr Udall said: “A number of people have complained to me about the lack of a testing station in St John’s, especially people without transport who could not easily get to County Hall.

“For the last couple of weeks I have had people from the St John’s area being asked to get a test and being unable to get one by post, so they’ve been asked to go to County Hall to gain a proper test.

“They are people without transport, and they are not in a well-state to walk all the way up there and certainly don’t want to go on a bus to contaminate other people. They have physically been unable to go and get a test.

“I wrote to the director of public health and asked what options there were to help these people and she came back to me to confirm the testing centre at Worcester Arena and will help people gain tests in St John’s.”

Cllr Udall said: “The people I have spoken to are over the moon. It will help a lot of people in the future if there’s one locally.”

The Worcester News contacted the Department of Health and Social Care for a comment but they failed to respond before our deadline.
