TWO major traffic projects for Bradford are likely to move to the next stage next month.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority, made up of representatives from local councils, has proposed a number of major road and infrastructure schemes across the region in the coming years.

At a meeting early in December, members will likely be asked to push ahead with two Bradford schemes.

The “Bradford to Shipley Route Improvement Scheme” will involve the widening of much of the Canal Road Corridor, improving a number of junctions and creating better public transport routes on Manningham Lane.

The scheme is expected to cost £42 million.

The Bradford Interchange Carriageway Works is a major scheme to repair and refurbish the bus carriageways at Bradford Interchange Station in the city centre.

In December the Authority’s West Yorkshire and York Investment Committee is due to discuss the two plans.

Members are likely to be asked to proceed through the outline business case for the Bradford to Shipley Route Improvement Scheme and begin work on a full business case - which will include much more details of what works are needed, their costing and their likely benefits.

They are also likely to progress to a full business case for the Bradford Interchange Carriageway Works, including a full costing for the scheme.

Work will be phased, meaning the bus station can remain operational.

Proposals to create a new rail station at the White Rose Shopping Centre and the creation of a new gateway for Leeds Bus Station is also likely to be discussed.

Details of the Bradford to Shipley Road Scheme were first revealed last year. It will involve 4.6 kilometres of road and will be two main strands to the project.

One route includes Canal Road and Valley Road, will see work to improve capacity on one of the district’s busiest stretches of road. It would include much of the route becoming either a dual carriageway or four lane road.

The other route would involve more “sustainable transport” between Shipley and the city centre, mainly along Bradford Road/Keighley Road/Manningham Lane. This would include more bus and cycle lanes, as well as better pedestrian facilities.

Last year Bradford Council purchased The Branch pub on Otley Road in Shipley, demolishing the building to make way for part of the scheme - work on the Bradford Road/Otley Road junction. Other junction improvement works will include the Queens Road/Kings Road junction, Otley Road/Valley Road and Oak Lane.

Although there had been information about the Bradford/Shipley scheme, little has been announced about the Interchange refurbishment plan so far.

On that scheme a spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Combined Authority said: “The scheme is part of the Combined Authority’s planned maintenance programme and will deliver essential repairs, renewal and resurfacing of the bus carriageways at Bradford Interchange.

“The works will be phased so that the bus station will remain operational for the duration of the scheme’s delivery.”
