HIGH schools across Warrington have been ranked according to their recent GCSE results with a majority of schools improving since last year.

Once again, King's Leadership Academy in Woolston topped the league tables after its progress 8 score was deemed 'well above average'.

This score shows how much progress pupils have made between the end of key stage two and the end of key stage four.

A score above zero means pupils made more progress, on average, than those with a score below zero.

Shane Ierston, principal of King's Leadership Academy, said: "I'm delighted that our young leaders performed well again in their GCSEs.

"I also acknowledge the hard work and effort that goes on across the whole of Warrington by schools, their teachers and parents to ensure that children are well prepared for the future.

"GCSE results are not what we are most proud of at King's, we are more impressed by the character, good manners and strong values demonstrated by our students.

"Examinations might get you to an interview when you leave school but it will be your character that secures the job!

"Sadly, character development is not measured in league tables, until a way is found to do this, parents shouldn't place too much emphasis on their credibility - ranking schools based on a set of numbers is damaging to education."

Lymm High school was also 'well above average' in this category while Great Sankey High School moved up four places from 'average' to 'above average'.

Cardinal Newman Catholic High School dropped seven places from last year's progress 8 result and is now 'below average' according to the data.

Progress 8 is a new measure of school performance. It replaces the previous measure of 5A*-C including English and maths, and shows how well pupils of all abilities have progressed, compared to pupils with similar academic starting points in other schools.
