THIS week, our regular trip down memory lane takes us to the statue of the Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens.

The original photograph was originally taken around 1890.

The lion is a sculpture and war memorial named after the Battle of Maiwand and was erected in 1884.

It was built to commemorate the deaths of 329 men from the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot during the campaign in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in Afghanistan between 1878 and 1880.

Every week the team at The Reading Chronicle pores through the archives to find these hidden gems. We would like to hear your memories of the local area and any thoughts you may have on the changes that have occurred. Get in touch with us by emailing andrew.colley@london.newsquest.co.uk or write to Reading Chronicle, Bowman House, 2-10 Bridge Street, Reading, RG12LU.

We’re on the lookout for more historic images from the area. Send your pictures and suggestions for our team to re-photograph.
