The holiday season runs pretty much all year round, but summer holidays remain our favourites and there are some fantastic last minute deals to be had, but before you book check out a few holiday essentials.

Where to go? Check the exchange rate against sterling. Choosing a holiday destination where the pound is strong will give you more buying power.

Driving to the airport? Compare car park charges across a variety of UK airports. You may find that the cost of leaving your car far outweighs any saving on your flight. Look at the whole airport experience: fuel to the airport, parking, flight times, flight surcharges for regional airports, transfer costs at your destination and convenience.

Book ‘off-centre’. Check for safe, regular and inexpensive public transport links to the beach, town centre or tourist attractions from out of town accommodation as staying off-centre, in a suburb or neighbouring town or village, is often far cheaper and can be a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the most popular areas.

Self-catering and room only accommodation keeps the cost down and gives you the perfect opportunity to sample local cafes, restaurants and bars.

Duty free shopping – check UK prices before you go as the deals aren’t as good as they used to be, especially when travelling in Europe.
