A PROPOSAL has been drawn up to create parking outside a city fish and chip shop after customers complained they were being fined while picking up their takeaways.

Councillor Richard Udall said the parking restrictions outside St John’s Fish Bar led to customers parking illegally on yellow lines during the day, which resulted in them getting tickets while buying their food.

Cllr Udall, who represents St John’s ward, said: “I had received more than one complaint from customers of the chip shop about getting a parking ticket.”

Following the issue, Cllr Udall wrote to the county council’s highways department proposing for available parking spaces for the shop’s customers.

Worcestershire County Council has put forward a proposal which will allow three spaces for cars to park for 45 minutes outside the takeaway in Lambert Road. The proposal is open for public consultation for people to either support or object to the idea.

Cllr Udall said: “All that’s happened is a consequence of my intervention. It is a step closer to supporting the business and helping its customers.

“I strongly believe that as long as the parking isn’t affecting road safety or road users then there is very little reason to object. The proposal will enable customers to park outside the shop during lunch time trade without disturbing residents in Lambert Road.”

In a tweet, Cllr Udall said: “Earlier this year I heard of residents receiving parking tickets when buying fish and chips in Lambert Road, I promised to help.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We can confirm that we have provided a proposal to Councillor Udall and this will now go through our normal consultation process.”
