HEAD coach Paul James is confident his side can create another piece of history for Worcester Wolves when they tackle Cheshire Phoenix in tomorrow’s BBL Cup final (3.30pm).

But James stressed it was not a day for “heroes” and instead urged his players to produce the “ultimate team game” in pursuit of victory.

Wolves will arrive at the Arena Birmingham in a rich vein of form having won 12 of their past 13 games in all competitions.

They have also beaten Cheshire twice this season, running out 91-78 winners in the league in October before knocking them out of the BBL Trophy with a 97-90 victory earlier this month.

But James is expecting a “different” Phoenix side to take to the court as both teams bid to get their hands on the trophy.

“It’s a one-off game and the last team standing is going to walk away with a piece of silverware,” James said.

“I think both teams will go the extra mile as far as what they need to do.

“In some games you may let one or two things go but in this match you can’t afford to let anything slip by.

“The opportunity is there for both teams and whoever goes and grabs it with both hands will win.”

James said he was “very proud” to see his side reach their first final since 2014 when they won the BBL Trophy and BBL play-offs.

But he insisted his players would need to raise their level to come out on top against Cheshire who feature former Wolves forward Orlan Jackman.

“I am confident we can beat Cheshire,” James said.

“We have beaten them twice this year in two very different games and I don’t think in either of those we played to our true potential.

“We also know they are a very good team and need to be respected.

“They have not got to the final by luck, they have got there by merit so we need to make sure we raise our level yet again.

“We don’t need any heroes out there, we need to play the ultimate team game and share the ball like we have been doing because that’s what has been successful for us.”

James is chasing his third trophy with Wolves since replacing Chuck Evans as boss in December 2009.

“A win over Cheshire tomorrow would mean a lot to me,” James added.

“Before I came here I was used to getting to finals and winning things.

“We were fortunate to do that here in the 2013-14 season.

“This club has never got to the BBL Cup final so we are creating history again and it would be nice to go the whole way and win it.

“I am very proud of the team and the club for what they have managed to put together this year.

“Hopefully it will be a great day out for everybody involved with the club.”
