MANAGERLESS Worcester Wolves are ready to “attack” the transfer market after outlining their vision for the 2018-19 British Basketball League campaign.

The University of Worcester Arena outfit are aiming to have a new head coach and director of basketball in place by mid-September.

But with only two months to go before the season gets under way managing director Mick Donovan is refusing to let their search disrupt their efforts to recruit players.

Donovan will be working with Spanish coach Dr Alejandro Vaquera and utilising Wolves’ close relationship with Valencia Basket to put together a “really exciting” team. “We have been chatting to agents,” Donovan said.

“We wanted to know where we were at and make a statement about what our vision was for the club.

“We want players who are interested in what we are doing rather than just looking for a job so now we have got a clear blueprint about bringing sports and education together we want to put a really exciting team on the court at the start of next season.

“We are not looking to lower our aspirations. We are going to raise them to succeed.

“We have been receiving a lot of communication from agents from around the world and we have told them to sit tight.

“But we have now put a plan in place and are ready to attack.”

Former boss Paul James had been looking to retain up to four players from last season’s squad before departing late last month to take the hot-seat at Plymouth Raiders.

But Wolves have yet to make any re-signings while experienced forward Alex Navajas ended his two-year stay at the club to join L’union Lourdes-Tarbes Pyrenees Basket in France.

Asked whether Worcester were going to keep hold of any players, Donovan said: “As always at the end of the season players will go away and look at what opportunities are out there.

“Sometimes there will be chances to play in a higher league or maybe earn more money.

“That is the same as always but what we are looking to do now is talk to the agents and see where the players are at and express our vision to them.

“Some of them may have already made plans like Alex. He got a fantastic offer in France which is a good league.

“We are really pleased for him because we had helped him on his way and he was a good captain for us.

“Alex was very respectful when he communicated with us about the opportunity.

“He may have come back if he had not had this offer but such is life.”

Wolves are likely to start pre-season without a man in charge following the departures of Paul James and Dale Ryan as head coach and director of basketball respectively.

But Donovan added: “A lot depends on who we will appoint as they could be in place a lot earlier.

“If they do not have to go through a visa process they could be here by mid-August which would be a lot easier.

“If it is someone from the United States it will be different as they will have to go through a visa process and that takes three or four weeks.”
