WORCESTERSHIRE crashed to an innings defeat inside two days against rivals Warwickshire at New Road in the LV= County Championship Division One.

After dismissing Warwickshire for 340, Worcestershire, who had posted 243 on the opening day, were shot for just 80 on a wretched afternoon for the hosts.

Worcestershire’s second innings lasted just 32.5 overs with only Tom Fell (23), Ben Cox (14) and Joe Clarke (13) reaching double figures.

Boyd Rankin (3-23), Keith Barker (3-26), Jeetan Patel (2-6) and Chris Wright (2-14) brought about the County’s downfall and sentenced them to a derby defeat by an innings and 17 runs.

Worcestershire had been softened up by Ian Bell’s 50th first-class century and clobbered by Rikki Clarke’s first fifty of the season.

Bell (111) was a class apart in taking his side to a first innings lead of 97 when they were dismissed for 340.

In two-and-a-half hours, Worcestershire were routed for 80, their lowest score since being bundled out for 60 when Warwickshire won the championship at New Road in 2012.

For Worcestershire’s seamers, Jack Shantry and Joe Leach, it must feel there is little justice.

While they had to bowl 54.5 overs, manfully sharing nine wickets, three Warwickshire counterparts, Wright, Rankin and Barker whistled through the home county’s batting.

Wright soon dismissed Daryl Mitchell and Richard Oliver.

Moeen Ali missed out on time in the middle when he was bowled by Barker.

Fell, after five boundaries, and Alex Gidman, perhaps unfortunate to get one that kept a shade low, were bowled by Rankin and then Barker was back to have Clarke taken by Bell at third slip.

Jeetan Patel bowled Leach, Rankin and Barker nipped in again for further wickets and Patel had last man Charlie Morris caught at mid-off.

Bell and Clarke had earlier produced a match-tilting partnership of 135 which in turn led to a heavier bombardment from Barker in an undefeated 50 from 54 balls.

When Tim Ambrose was out in the first over on the second morning, Warwickshire were still 137 runs behind with half the side having fallen to Shantry and Leach (4-80).

For a while, Shantry was a handful, pinning both Bell and Clarke on the hand, but before Worcestershire could achieve another breakthrough, the match was slipping away.

Bell, after hitting 11 boundaries, and Clarke, having made 67 from 115 balls, batted into the afternoon before they were both lbw in a double hit by Shantry.

Having claimed his 200th first-class wicket, the impressive Shantry later completed a return of 5-92.
