BRETT D'Oliveira and Joe Clarke each scored unbeaten hundreds as Worcestershire took control of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan by reaching stumps on the first day on 343-2.

D'Oliveira, who scored his maiden Championship century against Essex last week, finished the day on a career-best 152, while Clarke reached his ton in the penultimate over of a day that belonged to the third-wicket pair, whose stand is already worth 209.

Although there was more grass than usual left on the pitch at Cardiff, Worcestershire opted to bat after winning the toss.

Openers Daryl Mitchell (3) and D'Oliveira put on 26 before Craig Meschede trapped the Worcestershire captain lbw with one that nipped back in the seventh over.

The early breakthrough brought Moeen Ali (55), playing his last game for the County before joining the England squad next week, to the crease and he unfurled some trademark cover drives as the second-wicket pair added 108.

He was dropped on five, a difficult caught and bowled chance to Michael Hogan, but was then rarely troubled until he drove ambitiously at Graham Wagg to give wicketkeeper Mark Wallace a routine catch.

Clarke, the talented 19-year-old batsman who played for England Lions last winter, then joined D'Oliveira to share another substantial partnership.

D'Oliveira reached his half-century from 113 deliveries and maintained his pace to bring up his century 114 balls later, continuing his fine start to the season.

Clarke made a shaky start but, as the pitch got easier and the bowlers lacked the venom they showed earlier in the day, he confirmed his promise and soon reached his fifty with some powerful driving to both sides of the wicket.

Although the second new ball was taken, it made little difference to the scoring rate.

Clarke (105 not out) went on to score his third first-class century of the season although he was badly dropped from a caught and bowled chance on 83 by Wagg.

Mitchell Santner was handed his Worcestershire debut at the Swalec Stadium.

The New Zealand all-rounder is available for all of the County's North Group matches in the NatWest T20 Blast.

But Santner can also play in the Championship and came into the side in place of fellow Black Cap Matt Henry.
