JACK Shantry again showed his liking for facing Oxford MCCU with another five-wicket haul on day two at The Parks.

Shantry produced match figures of 31.3-19-26-10 in the corresponding fixture between the two sides 12 months ago.

And this time he returned 5-46 from 15.1 overs as the students were dismissed for 190.

The County, who declared on 345-9 in their first innings with Joe Clarke scoring 119, closed the day on 234-0 through Daryl Mitchell (116 not out) and Brett D’Oliveira (102no) for a giant lead of 389 runs.

Mitchell blasted 15 fours and one six, while D’Oliveira managed 11 boundaries in his maiden first-class ton.

Earlier, debutant Josh Tongue added another wicket to the two he got on the first evening to finish with 3-35 from 15 overs. Ed Barnard took 2-53.

Barnard made the first breakthrough of the day after Oxford resumed on 22-2 in having Calvin Dickinson (30) caught behind by wicketkeeper Ben Cox.

In the next over, Lloyd Paternott was lbw to Shantry for a duck to leave Oxford on 55-4.

Shantry came back into the attack and his first two balls claimed a double breakthrough.

Jack McIver (19) was caught by D’Oliveira and then the Cox-Shantry combination accounted for Malcolm Lake (0).

Cornelius Bodenstein survived the hat-trick delivery and, with Jack Grundy, provided the stiffest resistance to the County attack.

The sixth-wicket pair added 71 before Tongue earned his third success as Cox held on to another chance to end Grundy’s fine knock of 53 at 164-7.

Cox showed a safe pair of hands as Bodenstein (34) was undone by Barnard before Shantry struck quickly on his reintroduction to wrap up the innings.

Hassam Moseley (7) was trapped lbw to his second ball and Sam Weller (17) fell in the same manner.
