WORCESTERSHIRE have completed their first signing for next summer just 24 hours after clinching the Specsavers County Championship Division Two title.

Australian paceman Steve Magoffin, a player with a proven record in Division One cricket, is returning to New Road on a one-year contract.

Magoffin, who has enjoyed a prolific six-season spell with Sussex, initially played at New Road during the 2008 season.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes fended off interest from several other counties for Magoffin's signature including another Division One outfit who also offered him a contract.

Magoffin, 37, will add additional experience and depth to the Worcestershire attack as they look to try to establish themselves in the top flight.

Queensland-born Magoffin, who is now a UK passport holder, has taken 581 first-class wickets in his career at an average of 23.23, including 27 five-wicket hauls with many of them achieved during his successful time at Hove.

Rhodes said: "Steve is a proven wicket-taker in Division One and the impact he has had on county cricket has been immense.

"His experience and ability will add to our campaign and it shows our determination to have a very good 2018 season.

"We were the first county to sign him up as an overseas player and he did a marvellous job. He hits the seam regularly and gets good players out."

Rhodes added: "Steve has been a player very much sought after and has had a wonderful career both in Australia and in England.

"He brings some real depth and quality to our group of fast bowlers and will bring experience especially of playing in Division One."

Magoffin said: "I am delighted to be going back to Worcester. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be able to return after 10 years.

"I'm looking forward to getting there and working back with Bumpy (Rhodes) again and Mase (Matt Mason) and the boys who have had a really successful year going up as champions.

"Hopefully I can bring my experience of Division One and complement the young side with some fine young bowlers that has played some really good cricket.

"I still feel I've got plenty in the tank. I wouldn't get myself out there if I didn't think I could still perform at that level and put myself up against the best batters in the country.

"I've had a great time at Sussex. I've played the best cricket of my career down there, even more so than back in Australia.

"It was a great experience at Sussex but they are obviously moving in a different direction and I am as well.

"They will be fine and they've got some good young bowlers down there as well."
