WORCESTERSHIRE director of cricket Steve Rhodes admitted the remarkable third day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Leicestershire will live long in the memory.
The County routed Leicestershire for just 43 in the hosts’ second innings and then wrapped up a seven-wicket triumph with more than a day to spare in the Division Two clash at Grace Road.
“I’ve been involved in some crazy days of cricket over my career and this was certainly one of them,” said Rhodes.
“To win in such a convincing way was amazing really. The bowling and fielding was outstanding and I’m very proud of the boys.”
Opening bowlers Joe Leach (4-10) and Matt Henry (4-27) brought about Leicestershire’s downfall on a challenging pitch for the batsmen.
Rhodes said: “We were ready to chase 250 in our second innings, but it would have been very difficult, and you have to give some much credit to Matt and Joe, and they were backed up by some great fielding and catching.
“Things went our way, and I’m pleased for the lads because they’ve worked so hard in their previous games. We did it the hard way too, coming from behind to get the result.”
He added: “Joe (Leach) is a natural wicket-taker, he sometimes goes for a few, but from 0-82 he barely conceded a run in the rest of the match. Leicestershire dug themselves into a hole.”
