WORCESTERSHIRE captain Daryl Mitchell has been selected to lead a Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) squad on a tour of Japan.

Mitchell, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the New Road club, departed for the 13-day tour yesterday.

Former England captain and Middlesex bowler John Emburey will manage the squad and Mitchell will also be joined by former Worcestershire teammate Ben Scott.

MCC will play eight matches against a number of teams on the tour which takes in Chiba, Yokohama, Akishima, and Sano.

The players will also be giving coaching sessions to local children who would not usually have access to training facilities and coaches with professional backgrounds.

This will be the second time Mitchell has represented MCC in 2014 after turning out for the club alongside West Indies legend Brian Lara in the Lord’s bicentenary celebration match against Hertfordshire in June.

Mitchell said: “It’s an honour to be asked to captain MCC on this tour and I’m really looking forward to it.

"We’ve got some exciting matches lined up and hopefully we can develop the cricket skills of the local children too. There’s a good bunch of players heading out there so I’m sure it will be beneficial for everyone.”

MCC president David Morgan said: “MCC has long taken touring sides out to Japan and I’m delighted we have another group going out there to continue to promote the MCC Spirit of Cricket.

"We’ve got an excellent group travelling to Japan and I’m sure the local budding cricketers will learn a lot from the vast experience of John Emburey, Daryl Mitchell and the rest of the squad.

"I’d like to thank the Japanese Cricket Foundation for the invitation and I look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship.”
