WORCESTER Warriors boss Alan Solomons is “optimistic” scrum-half Francois Hougaard will be back for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle Falcons at Sixways (3pm).

Hougaard has been recovering from bruised ribs sustained in Warriors’ previous home game against Wasps earlier this month.

The knock forced the influential number nine to miss Worcester’s trip to Sale last Sunday.

But Solomons admitted there was a “reasonable prospect” Hougaard could be fit to face Falcons.

“We are optimistic,” Solomons said.

“I think we will only make our final decisions during the course of tomorrow.”

Should Hougaard return it would be a big boost for Worcester who have picked up just two losing bonus points from their opening two league games.

The 30-year-old who recently retired from international rugby to focus on playing for Warriors has been instrumental in retaining the club’s top-flight status over the past three seasons.

“It is always good if one of your players who has international experience returns – there is no doubt that’s a positive,” Solomons continued.

“There is a reasonable prospect of that (happening).”

Jonny Arr started in Warriors’ 21-15 defeat at Sale at the weekend before Michael Heaney came on in his place to make his competitive debut for the Sixways side.

“It could become a selection issue,” Solomons added.

“We will decide what we think is in the best interest of the team.

“As we know Jonny is a very experienced player and I thought Michael played very well when he came on at the weekend.”
